אמר רב פפא כמחלוקת ליוחסין כך מחלוקת לענין גיטין ורב יוסף אמר מחלוקת ליוחסין אבל לגיטין דברי הכל עד ארבא תניינא דגישרא
R. Papa said: Just as they differ over lineage, so they differ over divorce.
But R. Yosef said: They differ only in respect to lineage, but as for divorce, all agree that it is as far as the second willow clump beyond the bridge.
R. Papa says that the borders of Babylonia with regard to lineage are the same as those with regard to divorce. When it comes to divorce, a messenger delivering a divorce from abroad to Eretz Yisrael must be able to say it was written and signed in front of me. This is to ensure it was produced properly. However, if he is bringing it from Babylonia, we can trust that it was written and signed properly.
R. Yosef says that the borders differ when it comes to divorce.
אמר רמי בר אבא חביל ימא תכילתא דבבל שוניא וגוביא תכילתא דחביל ימא
רבינא אמר אף ציצורא
תניא נמי הכי חנן בן פנחס אומר חביל ימא תכילתא דבבל שוניא וגוביא וציצורא תכילתא דחביל ימא
Rami b. Abba said: Habil Yamma is the glory of Babylonia. Shunya and Gubya are the glory of Habil Yamma.
Rabina said: Tzitzura too.
It was also taught in a baraita: Hanan b. Pinhas said: Habil Yamma is the glory of Babylonia: Shunya and Gubya and Titzura are the glory of Habil Yamma.
If you re from one of these places, then you ve won the lineage lottery. Like the Upper East Side of Babylonia!
אמר רב פפא והאידנא איערבי בהו כותאי
ולא היא איתתא הוא דבעא מינייהו ולא יהבו ליה מאי חביל ימא אמר רב פפא זו פרת דבורסי
R. Papa said: But nowadays Samaritans have become mixed up with them.
But this is not so: They [the Samaritans] sought a wife from them, but they did not give him.
What is Habil Yamma?
R. Papa said: The Euphrates near Borsi.
R. Papa tries to rag on the lineage of these places by saying Samaritans have become mixed up there. Luckily the Talmud defends their honor the Samaritans wanted a wife from one of these places, but they were refused.
ההוא גברא דאמר להו אנא מן שוט מישוט עמד רבי יצחק נפחא על רגליו ואמר שוט מישוט בין הנהרות עומדת
וכי בין הנהרות עומדת מאי הוי אמר אביי אמר ר’ חמא בר עוקבא אמר רבי יוסי בר’ חנינא בין הנהרות הרי היא כגולה ליוחסין
והיכא קיימא אמר ר’ יוחנן מאיהי דקירא ולעיל והא אמר רבי יוחנן עד מעברתא דגיזמא אמר אביי רצועה נפקא
A certain man said: I come from Shot-Mishot.
R. Yitzchak Nafha stood up on his feet and declared: Shot-Mishot lies between the rivers.
And so what if it lies between the rivers?
Abaye said in the name of R. Hama b. Ukba in the name of R. Yose son of R. Hanina: Between the rivers is as the Exile [i.e. Babylonia] in respect of lineage.
And where is that located?
R. Yohanan said: From Ihi de Kira and upwards.
But didn t R. Yohanan say: [The upper limit of Babylon is] as far as the ford of Gizma.
Abaye said: A strip extends [beyond that limit].
A man declares he is from Shot-Mishot. Lucky for him, this is located between the rivers and he is assumed to have good lineage.
