Avodah Zarah, Daf Lamed Daled, Part 3

 

Introduction

The mishnah ruled that grape pits and grape skins belonging to idolaters are prohibited. Our sugya discusses the issue.

 

החרצנים והזגים של עובדי כוכבים וכו’:

ת"ר החרצנים והזגים של עובדי כוכבים לחין אסורין יבשים מותרים

הי נינהו לחין והי נינהו יבשין?

אמר רב יהודה אמר שמואל לחין כל י"ב חדש יבשים לאחר י"ב חדש

 

Grape pits and grape-skins of idolaters etc. Our Rabbis taught: Grape pits and grape-skins of idolaters are forbidden while moist but permitted when dry. Which are considered moist and which dry? Rav Judah said in the name of Shmuel: They are considered moist during the first twelve months, and dry after the twelve months.

 

Once the grape pits and skins have dried up they are permitted. The wine in them has totally disappeared. But this process takes a full twelve months. That s a long time to dry up.

 

אתמר אמר רבה בר בר חנה א"ר יוחנן כשהן אסורין אסורין אפילו בהנאה כשהן מותרין מותרין אפילו באכילה.

 

It has been stated: Raba b. Bar-Hana said in the name of R. Yohanan: When they are forbidden, it is prohibited to derive any benefit from them, and when they are permitted, it is permitted even to eat them.

 

When they are moist, one may not even derive benefit from these grape skins or pit. But when they are dry, one may eat them. Not sure why one would want to, but you can, if you want.

 

א"ר זביד האי דורדיא דחמרא דארמאי בתר תריסר ירחי שתא שרי

אמר רב חביבא בריה דרבא הני גולפי בתר תריסר ירחי שתא שרי

אמר רב חביבא הני אבטא דטייעי בתר תריסר ירחי שתא שרי

אמר רב אחא בריה דרב איקא הני פורצני דארמאי בתר תריסר ירחי שתא שרי

אמר רב אחא בריה דרבא הני גולפי שחימי ואוכמי בתר תריסר ירחי שתא שרי:

 

R. Zevid said: This yeast made of wine of non-Jews, after a complete year of twelve months it is permitted.

R. Habiba the son of Rava said: These jugs after a complete year of twelve months hey are permitted.

R. Habiba said: These wine-bags belonging to travelers after a complete year of twelve months, they are permitted.

R. Aha the son of R. Ika said: These kernels sold by Arameans after a complete year of twelve months, they are permitted.

R. Aha the son of Rava said: Those red or black jugs after a complete year of twelve months they are permitted.

 

All of these items lose their taste of forbidden wine after twelve months and therefore may be used by Jews.
