Introduction

Today s section briefly discusses Rabban Shimon ben Gamaliel s statement from the mishnah.

 

רשב"ג אומר בזמן שהקרע שלו עגול אסור משוך מותר:

אמר רב יוסף אמר רב יהודה אמר שמואל הלכה כרשב"ג

א"ל אביי הלכה מכלל דפליגי

א"ל מאי נפקא לך מינה?

א"ל גמרא גמור זמורתא תהא:

 

R. Shimon b. Gamaliel says when its tear is round [the skin] it is forbidden, but if oblong it is permitted.

R. Joseph said in the name of Rav Judah who said it in the name of Shmuel: The halakhah follows R. Shimon b. Gamaliel.

Abaye said: The halakhah follows implies that they argue about this?

He said to him: What difference does it make to you?

He said back to him: Is the learning of the tradition, to be like the singing of a song?

 

All of the amoraim agree that the halakhah follows Rabban Shimon ben Gamaliel only a round tear is prohibited.

The dispute between Abaye and R. Joseph is over whether it is important to know whether or not it is important to know if there was a dispute between Rabban Shimon ben Gamaliel and the other sages.
