Introduction
More theoretical questions. I want to emphasize again these questions are not representative of the way people actually acted. They are theoretical musings as to how we can understand language, what assumptions we can make about what people may mean when they say certain things. Men are not buying cows and betrothing in one short pithy statement.
בעי רבא שתי בנותיך לשני בני בפרוטה מהו בתר נותן ומקבל אזלינן והאיכא ממונא או דילמא בתר דידהו אזלינן והא ליכא תיקו
Rava asked: What [if he declares,] Your two daughters [be betrothed] to my two sons for a perutah ? Do we consider the giver and the receiver, so that there is money; or perhaps, we consider them and there is not? The question stands.
If one person does the betrothing and one person does the accepting (on behalf of their children) can they get away with a two for the price of one deal? No answer to this one either.
בעי רב פפא בתך ופרתך בפרוטה מהו מי אמרינן בתך בחצי פרוטה ופרתך בחצי פרוטה או דילמא בתך בפרוטה ופרתך במשיכה תיקו
R. Papa asked: What [if he declares,] You daughter and your cow for a perutah ? Do we say [it means,] your daughter for half a perutah, and your cow for half a perutah, or perhaps [he meant,] Your daughter by a perutah, and your cow by drawing it near ? The question stands.
Here he tries to finagle a cow out of the deal too. Can we imagine that he is betrothing with the perutah and just acquiring the cow by drawing it to him (he ll pay back later)? Again, no answer.
בעי רב אשי בתך וקרקעך בפרוטה מהו בתך בחצי פרוטה וקרקעך בחצי פרוטה או דילמא בתך בפרוטה וקרקעך בחזקה תיקו
R. Ashi asked: What [if one declares,] Your daughter and your land for a perutah ? Does he mean, Your daughter for half a perutah and your land for half a perutah; or perhaps, Your daughter for a perutah, and your land by hazakah ? The question stands.
Land can be acquired by hazakah which means possession. Other than that, this is essentially the same question as asked by R. Papa above.
